The New Case for Sustainability

Compliance, competitive advantage — or strategic distraction?

2nd July 2026

9:15 am

The Hub, PwC's Academy

Special Guest: Dr Joe Zammit Lucia

What is the real case for sustainability now?

This is the question organisations should be asking, sustainability regulation shifts and the boardroom narrative becomes more uncertain.

For some, sustainability remains primarily about compliance, risk management and regulatory readiness. For others, it may offer a path to cost efficiency, resilience, market access, reputation and long-term competitive advantage. But not every sustainability initiative creates value, and not every organisation has the capability or strategic reason to pursue the same priorities.

This closed-door executive session will open with a fireside chat with Dr Joe Zammit-Lucia, author of The New Political Capitalism, exploring how business, politics, regulation, public trust and stakeholder expectations are increasingly connected.

Participants will then move into an interactive peer discussion to test their narratives: what is driving the sustainability agenda, where the real business case lies, and how leaders can influence decisions more effectively.

Join us for a strategic conversation about sustainability, decision-making and the real conditions under which sustainability can create value, or become a distraction.

Dr Joe Zammit-Lucia advises companies on the intersection between business, politics and stakeholder expectations, particularly where business issues become political or politicised.

He has held senior executive roles in multinational companies, founded and sold a market-leading international business, and later worked in the environmental and public policy space, including as adviser to the Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. He has also founded two public policy think tanks.

Joe is the author of several public policy papers and three books, including The New Political Capitalism. His work focuses on how organisations can navigate legitimacy, trust and decision-making in an increasingly politicised business environment.
